How to Recover Deleted Facebook Messages?

Facebook is a great platform to communicate with your friends and family.

Some of us have the habit of clearing all the chats. And sometimes we lose the most important ones in this process.

And the panic starts.

Some messages are precious, bringing back memories while some have important information. And so we come to the Internet to look for ways that will help us recover deleted Facebook messages.

Even though Facebook stores the data that you have deleted for about 90 days there is no official way to restore and retrieve the deleted messages on Facebook.

But do not worry.

Because the techno savvy people have got some workarounds and data recovery software that can help you instantly recover deleted Facebook messages.

How to Recover Deleted Facebook Messages?

When you delete a message or chat from your account, it is usually for the good. But if you still want to restore those messages, then here are a few ways that can help you.

Method 1 – Retrieve Deleted Facebook Messages on PC

If you are one of those who use the website version of Facebook, then you can use the following method to recover your deleted messages.

This method is for all the users who want to restore Facebook messages from PC.

Step 1 – Login to your account on PC. Then go to the Settings.

Step 2 – Click on General Account Settings. Under the General Settings, click on Your Facebook Information.

Step 3 – Then click on the Download your Information option.

Step 4 – You will be then redirected to a new window. Here you will get all the information of the activity that you have done on Facebook from the time you joined Facebook.

Step 5 – You will see a lot of options like Posts, Messages, Friends, Photos and Videos, Likes and Reactions and much more. Check the option you want, like Messages.

Step 7 – The processing of files will start as a pop-up message will appear. Later you will get a notification on Facebook when the process iscompleted.

Step 8 – Next click on the Download button. You will have to enter the password for security reasons.

Step 9 – You will receive a download link in your email Id that is associated with your Facebook account.

Step 10 – Next click on the Download Archive option, and you will be able to save everything on your device.

Step 11 – Now unzip the downloaded folder. And go to the Index file.

It will contain all the Facebook Data. Choose Messages and you will be able to see all the messages, even the ones that you have previously deleted.

Method 2 – Recover Deleted Facebook Messages on Android

Did you know if you are using Facebook Messenger on an Android smartphone, then your device actually has a copy of all your data in its storage space?

Yes, Facebook Messenger follows the “Off the Internet” principle and so you just have to locate the deleted chats folder in the File Management App.

Step 1 – Go to the File Manager/ Explorer of your device. And then open the SD Card or Storage folder.

Step 2 – Locate the Android folder within this folder. It saves all the Android data related to the various applications.

Step 3 – Next go to Data Folder. Choose the Cache folder and then click on fb_temp.

This folder has all the backup files of the Facebook application. And so you may find the deleted chats and messages of your Facebook account in this folder only.

Method 3 – Restore Deleted Messages on Android via Desktop

There is another way to recover the deleted Facebook messages and it involves both your Android smartphone and your Windows PC.

So if the individual methods did not work for you, then here is how you can recover the messages.

Step 1 – Connect your Android smartphone to the PC or laptop via USB cable.

Step 2 – Locate your device. Click on Internal storage/SD Card> Android> Data.

Step 3 – Now locate the “com.facebook.orca” folder and click on it.

Step 4 – Within this folder you will find another folder named Cache. Click on it.

Step 5 – Now click on fb_temp. Within this folder you will get all the Facebook messages and chats.

This is your go to folder to get all the Facebook backups.

Method 4 – Retrieve Deleted Facebook Messages on iOS

If you are using an iPhone then the process is a little different. There is no method to retrieve the messages from the storage of your phone. And so you require a data recovery app to get those deleted messages.

Step 1 – Firstly, download the Dr.Fone app on your device.

Step 2 – Now connect your device to the computer or laptop.

Step 3 – Launch the app. And click on the Recovery option.

The app will start the scanning process. Wait till the process finishes.

Step 5 – Click on the Messenger option. And your messages or chats that you will select will be restored.

Method 5 – Recover Facebook Messages by Unarchiving

There are slight chances that while checking your chat you swipe the message and it gets archived while the whole time you kept thinking that it got deleted.

So another way to restore the Facebook message via Messenger is by unarchiving them.

The steps to reach the archived folder on Facebook Messenger are the same for Android and iOS platforms.

Step 1 – Launch the Messenger app on your phone. If you are not logged in, then login to your Facebook account.

Step 2 – Click on the Search bar. Type the name of the person or any keyword that will take you to the chat that you have deleted accidently.

Step 3 – Send the person a new message. As you will send a message to the person, your entire chat with him/her will be unarchived.

Another way to unarchive the chats or messages is by opening the Chats window. Just click on Settings, and there you will find the Archived Chats option.

Method 6 – Restore Facebook Messages Via Email

Facebook’s default settings link your Facebook account with your email ID. And so every time you get a message, you also receive an email regarding the message.

And so if you haven’t changed the settings then you will have every Facebook message in your Email.

However, if you have or haven’t made the changes, then here is how you can check it.

Step 1 – Head to the Facebook Settings.

Step 2 – Click on the Notifications option. You will be able to see the expanded list now, click on Email.

Step 3 – Now check whether the Settings are set to “On Suggested” or any other that you want.

So Gmail will have an email of all the incoming Facebook messages. You can thus check your Social folder or Spam to not miss any of the messages.

Bonus Tip

If none of the above methods works for you, which is not possible. But still if some message that was really important or had some information like address or phone number, then here is what you can do.

Ask the sender who had sent you the message to resend it to you. You can always ask for a copy or a screenshot of your chat with him/her.
