How to Create a Kodi Build Quickly on Your Own

The standard Kodi setup has come a long way with its builds and addons. A lot of improvements have been introduced for the users to meet their needs.

And today we are going to talk about one such Kodi feature- creating a Kodi Build on our own.

Yes, even though Kodi offers hundreds of working add-ons and builds, you have the option of building a Kodi build of your own.

You can choose from a wide range of brilliant displays and backgrounds, add shortcuts, and optimize it for quicker access. It is like your Kodi is on the next level.

How to Create a Custom Kodi Build?

There are different ways to create your own Kodi build. And today we are going to share one of the easiest ways with which you can customize a Kodi build for yourself.

Part I- Enable Unknown Sources

Let us begin the process by getting our Kodi system ready for the installation of third-party applications.

Step 1- Open Kodi Settings. And go to System Settings.

Step 2- Click on Add-ons. And then click on the toggle button against the Unknown Sources option.

Step 3- A warning message will pop-up. Click on the Yes option and continue.

Step 4- Then from the left corner of your screen, change the mode to Expert.

Part II- Edit Video Settings

Step 5- Now return to the Settings. And open Media Settings.

Step 6- Look for the Show hidden files and directories option under the General tab. And click on the toggle button to enable it.

Step 7- Then go to the Videos section. And now set the “Select first unwatched TV show season/episode” option to Always.

This is important as whenever you play any show from your library it will resume the episode from where you left.

Part III- Create Your Own Media Source File

Step 8- Now return to the main settings page. And open File Manager.

Since we are not adding any build but creating it, so we will be adding source from external storage to our library.

Step 9- Next click on Add Source option from the left menu.

Step 11- And then select External storage. After the next screen opens click on Ok.

Step 12- Then give this file a name, say 0. And press Ok.

Part IV- Change your Default Kodi Skin

If you are using the default Estuary Skin, then we would suggest you change it. It is hard to work with this skin and so get a new skin like the Arctic: Zephyr.

Step 1- From the main Settings menu, choose Interface Settings.

Step 2- Then click on the Skin option.

Step 3- Choose the Get More option. A list of all the Kodi skins will come up. Choose Arctic Zephyr.

Step 4- The Skin installation process will begin.

Step 5- A new pop-up window will come asking if you want to keep the changes. Click on Yes.

Part V- Customize the Arctic Zephyr Skin

Once you have installed the skin, you can customize it according to your choice. From theme, fonts, to various other customizations are possible.

Step 1- Let’s start with the theme. There are different options available. You can change the theme set to default to Dark with Dark Dialogs, Dark with Light Dialogs or Square.

Step 2- Next go to Fonts and change them to Large or Fallback Arial or let it be set to default.

Step 3- Now go to Configure Skin. Here you change the Home menu style from Classic to Vertical or Featured.

Step 4- Next there is an option that allows you to limit the number of items in the widget. You can customize the number and even set it to Unlimited.

Step 5- Scroll down and have a look at more options. If you want you can further tick the checkboxes according to your choice.

Step 6- Next go to the Background section. Here also you can mess with the options as you want. However, make sure you have selected the “Show fanart” option.

Step 7- Again, within the Video section, click on the Show fanart option.

Step 8- Next under the Extras section, you will find the “Select highlight color” option. You can choose the color of your choice.

It is a great chance for you to make your Kodi look like Netflix.

Part VI- Set a New Background

You can set any image that you like as your background, provided you have it on your storage. And if not, then you can download it from the Internet.

Step 1- Download an image of high resolution on your device. It will get saved in the default folder that is usually the Download folder.

Step 2- Exit the Internet Explorer. Go to your Downloads folder.

Step 3- Select the image and then move it to the .kodi folder. Then save it in the Media folder.

Step 4- Return to the Kodi interface now. Check out the following screenshot to know how the default Arctic Zephyr skin looks like.

Step 5- Now open Settings. And click on Skin Settings.

Step 6- Choose Customize Home Menu option.

Step 8- Choose Single Image and then open the external storage folder that we created above- “0”.

Step 9- Now click on Android> data> org.xbmc.kodi> files> .kodi> media.

This is the path location where we saved our background image. It might change in your case if you have saved it at any other location.

Step 10- Select the image. And return to the home screen.

In a few seconds, the image will be loaded and will be set as the new background.

Part VII- Add Menu Items and Widgets

On the Kodi home screen, you might not see different options at the bottom menu. And so you can add different options like Search, Movies, TV shows and so on for quicker access.

By default, there are some options like Settings, and so let us add some more.

Step 1- Go to Settings. And then click on Skin Settings> Customize Home Menu option.

Step 2- In the Customize main menu, there are different options given on the left side. You can either add more items by clicking on the plus sign or delete them as well.

Step 3- Also while you select one item, you can change its further properties like the background, widget aspect, submenu, and more from the right side.

You can set the background image for every item, however, making a lot of changes can slow down your system. So try to keep it minimal.

Next, let us add some widgets to the different menu items.

Step 1- So while at the Customize main menu window, click on one of the items, say Movies.

Step 2- Then on the menu at the right side, click on Widget.

Step 3- Go to Add-ons. And choose Video Add-ons.

Step 4-You can now choose any Video add-on of your choice. We are selecting Placenta for reference.

Step 5- As the Placenta window opens, click on Movies. And then click on Use as Widget.

Step 6- You can give your widget a new name or go with the default name. And press Done.

Step 7- If you want to change the background image, then follow the same steps mentioned above.

You can create widgets and sub-menus like this for any menu item on your Kodi home screen.

Part VIII- Change Video Add-on Settings

To optimize the performance of your Kodi add-ons, you need to keep a check on some Settings. So if you are using the Placenta Video add-on or any other add-on to stream movies and TV shows, here are a few things that you can change.

Firstly, make sure you have allowed providers who offer valid and active links. Some providers often host dead links or do not work greatly. So follow the given steps to uncheck them-

Step 1- From the home screen, click on Videos> Video Add-ons.

Step 2- Now choose the Video Add-on that you are using, say Placenta. Right-click on it to open the Context Menu.

Step 4- Go to the Providers section. From the list, you can turn on and off the provider you want.

Secondly, you can change the quality of the videos you are streaming. If you have a poor Internet connection, then bring it down for a no buffer experience.

Step 5 So now click on Playback. And change the Max Quality to 720p.

You can go through other options as well and make changes according to your wish. Once you are done, click on Ok.
